Our Story
Most of you know our story or have been part of it along the way. So we'll try to keep this brief:
It was the 1990s. Otherwise known as the Post-Cold War decade. George H.W. was in office. Clinton followed. Breakthroughs in technology, the internet, the Bulls franchise, pop culture, Bill Nye, and the beanie babies were…present. Movies like Toy Story, The Lion King, Friday, and Titanic graced our movie theaters. Sony's Playstation hit the shelves of our shopping centers. Eddie Vedder found his voice and the U.S. hosted the FIFA Men’s World Cup for it’s first time.
As all this swirled about, Camilla and Felipe were babies, toddlers, little humans, who knew nothing of each other.

The decades passed. A bunch of life happened. And in January 2019, both Camilla and Felipe found themselves at the Chicago URTA Graduate Acting School Auditions. It was a Midwest polar vortex weekend. Unbeknownst to one another, the two twenty-something-year-olds reported to the Hilton Palmer House Hotel to have a go at changing their lives.
The two clocked each other multiple times throughout the weekend. They had their thoughts. Dare we say judgements. And at the end of it all, they found themselves passing each other in a lonely hallway. Their eyes met. They nodded. A recognition of...something.
Then they moved on. A few weeks later, they both got word they had been offered a spot in SMU’s Graduate Acting School cohort.
And the following Fall, they started their SMU journey.
In their first semester, Camilla and Felipe shared rides to classes, music interests, relationship struggles, and a long debate on free will versus determinism.
They watched each other's journeys in class and were reminded of some important things about themselves. Some things they had lost sight of. Some things they were holding tight to.
Belief. Wonder. Pain. Resilience. Play. Faith.
Near the end of the first Semester, they were assigned a few scenes together. They eagerly scheduled their rehearsals. They loved the work that was happening. And when they left that work, it was clear a curiosity and recognition between them lingered.
Then on December 13th, 2019, Camilla asked Felipe to go climbing with her.
Following climbing, Felipe asked Camilla to talk. He needed to clear the air. As he rambled, Camilla thought he was leading to a, "and this has got to stop because you liking me is just getting in the way of our work."
But instead, Felipe ended with:
"And I can't stop thinking about you."
"Oh."
They sat in Camilla's parked car. Camilla a bit flabbergasted that Felipe had just cleared the air like this. Felipe a bit in disarray after his confession.
"I can't stop thinking about you either."
They smiled. Recognition confirmed.
From there, they got to figuring out how to do grad school with this new understanding. After all they were only one semester in. Two and a half years left to go.
They did figure it out, albeit with many a necessary bump in the road.
In 2022, they became MFA graduates! They hugged! They danced! They kissed!
And then they parted ways and lived across the world from eachother for a year.
No, no - it was a good thing. Camilla moved to Bulgaria to teach on a Fulbright for a year and Felipe got back to the Chicago theatre scene!
After a year of FaceTime conversations on an eight hour time difference, Felipe stood at the bottom of the Chicago Midway Airport escalators.
Eventually a pair of beat up White Nikes appeared at the top of the moving stairwell. Camilla slowly emerged. And as she did, she spotted a pair of orange Adidas runners waiting below.
After three years of navigating grad school, followed by a year of long distance, those shoes carried their bodies into a long, long, long, embrace.
Then they headed to baggage claim.
Since then, Camilla and Felipe have grown more and more in love.
They’ve supported one another in pursuing their creative paths while making rent. They’ve watched each other soar on stage. They’ve witnessed each others struggle in process. They’ve collaborated together - building original shows and performing under their performance duo, DaughterBoy.
They’ve made friends. They’ve camped. Built ritual. Adopted two cats. Made their home in Lincoln Square. Arranged. Rearranged. Rearranged some more. Watched the cats take over their rearrangements. Found grace for that.
But to be honest, the most important thing they’ve done - and try always to remember to do - is find time to return to that place of recognition between them.
It was this place, a still moment of recognition, that Felipe realized he was ready to propose to Camilla.
So on, 9/25/25, after asking Camilla to go for an early morning climb - after the last route of the work out - Felipe lowered Camilla down from the route she had just ascended.
He asked her how it was. She told him it took leaps of faith.
And Felipe got down on a knee.
And now, here we are:
From our adult-toddler selves, we thank you each for being in our lives and we cannot wait to have you with us as we take this leap into the next chapter of our story.
